Poland rises in economic freedom ranking

Poland surged 12 places to 53rd in the world in terms of the level of economic freedom, according to the annual Economic Freedom of the World report by Canada’s Fraser Institute and the Economic Freedom Network. The country’s advance reflects a combination of a modest improvement in its own score, to 7 points (out of 10) from 6.9 points in 2010 (mainly thanks to the abolition of conscription), and setbacks for economic freedom in some other countries that were previously ranked ahead of it. (The ranking reflects the situation in 2009).

Hong Kong again topped the list (9.01 points), followed by Singapore, New Zealand, and Switzerland. The highest-ranking CEE country is Slovakia (13th). Most other countries of the region also ranked higher than Poland: Hungary and Estonia in 15th, Lithuania in 24th, Bulgaria in 28th, the Czech Republic in 46th, and Romania in 48th. One exception is Latvia (60th).

Poland scored particularly low on "size of government" (95th, 5.63, up from 5.59), whereas its ranking was highest on "access to sound money" (33rd, 9.32, up from 9.21). The other three parameters measured by the report were "legal system and property rights", "freedom to trade internationally", and "regulation" (including credit-market, labour-market and business regulations), with Poland’s score ranging between 6.25 and 6.95 points.

The latest report ranks a total of 141 countries according to the level of economic freedom. Its Polish edition was prepared by the Adam Smith Centre, a think-tank that represents the network in Poland.
