Sikorsky to shed jobs in Mielec in response to tougher market conditions

Sikorsky, the US helicopter maker, on 15 September announced plans for limited lay-offs at its plant in Mielec (Podkarpackie voivodship). The decision is part of a wider job-cutting drive that will see the axing of 540 jobs, or about 3% of the company’s total staff, at Sikorsky's factories in Connecticut in the United States and in Mielec. It reflects slowing economic growth in the US and global economies, which is hurting demand from the group’s commercial and military customers and forcing an adjustment to the expected lower work volumes, Sikorsky explained.

According to a senior union source cited by Puls Biznesu, Sikorsky's PZL Mielec will conduct a voluntary lay-off programme that is expected to cover about 5% of employees. This means that some 100 workers would be made redundant, out of a total workforce of 2,100.

Sikorsky, which is a unit of United Technologies, makes military Black Hawk as well as civilian helicopters. It employs 18,000 people worldwide. In 2007 the group acquired PZL Mielec, Poland’s number one aerospace manufacturer, which at that time employed 1,500 people.
