Industrial output up by 8.1% y-o-y in August

Industrial output rose by 8.1% y-o-y in August, a sharp acceleration compared with the previous month, according to data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS). The result far surpassed market expectations, which were in the region of 3.5% y-o-y.

Compared with the corresponding period of 2010, output was up in 25 (out of 34) industrial sectors. Of the main sectors, the highest growth (up by 9.3% y-o-y) was noted in manufacturing, followed by water supply, waste management and remediation activities (up by 6.2% y-o-y). In the two other sectors production was lower than a year earlier: in mining-quarrying it declined by 0.6% y-o-y, and in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply it decreased by 2.3% y-o-y.

In the case of the country’s manufacturing sub-sectors, particularly strong increases were reported in basic metals (up by 24% y-o-y), motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (up by 23.2% y-o-y), metal products (up by 17.9% y-o-y), electrical equipment (up by 17.6% y-o-y), furniture (up by 16.2% y-o-y), or rubber and plastic products (up by 14.3% y-o-y). On the other hand, production of computer, electronic and optical equipment slumped by 12.5% y-o-y, while in chemicals and chemical products output was down by 7.1% y-o-y.

In January-August industrial output grew by 6.9% y-o-y.
