Minimum wage to rise by 8.2% in 2012

The government on 13 September approved an 8.2% increase in the statutory minimum wage as of next year. The minimum wage will be PLN 1,500 (approx. €347) effective from 1 January 2012, up from PLN 1,386 (€321) at the moment. Its current level is the product of a 5.2% increase approved a year ago.

The scale of the increase was criticised by the Polish Confederation of Private Employers (PKPP) Lewiatan, which says it is not justified by efficiency gains and will negatively affect employers’ willingness to hire workers. Low-skilled workers in depressed areas in Eastern Poland will be the main losers, the Confederation said.
