GSK expands Poznan plant

2011-09-13

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) on 12 September inaugurated a new production line for making soft capsules at its factory in Poznan. The value of the investment – the biggest single project by GSK in Poland to date – is PLN 75m (approx. €17.4m), of which PLN 58m (€13.4m) was spent on new production equipment and innovative environment protection solutions. The new unit will have the capacity to put out 14 million packages a year when it reaches full operational capability, and will employ several dozen workers.

The project takes the total value of GSK’s investments in Poland since acquiring the then-Polfa Poznan from the state in 1998 to $450m (€330m). At present the company’s Polish operations employ 1,700 people, of which 900 in Poznan. Exports account for about 60% of local production.

News of the planned capacity extension first surfaced in January 2010. CEO Jerzy Toczyski said at the time that the move reflected cost considerations as well the factory’s status as one of the most efficient GSK plants in Europe.

GSK employs 96,000 people at 80 manufacturing sites and 12 R&D centres in 100 countries worldwide.
