LFS unemployment rate falls to 9.5% in Q2


The unemployment rate, as measured according to the Labour Force Survey (LFS), amounted to 9.5% in the second quarter of 2011, i.e. 0.5 p.p. down compared to Q1 and unchanged from a year earlier, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported.

During the analysed period, the total number of people out of work stood at approximately 1.69 million, which represented a decrease of 81,000 from Q1 2011, but was 8,000 higher than in the same period of 2010. Meanwhile, the employment rate amounted to 50.7% in Q2, up by 0.7 p.p. in relation to the previous quarter and by 0.4 p.p. in relation to Q2 2010. At the same time, the number of economically inactive persons fell by 103,000, or 0.7%, versus the preceding quarter and equalled 14 million people. As a result, the economic activity rate increased by 0.4 p.p. compared to Q1 2011 to 56%. On a year-on-year basis, it rose by 0.3 p.p.
