Retail sales growth slows to 8.2% y-o-y in July

Retail sales at current prices rose by 8.2% y-o-y in July, a decline compared to the previous month, according to data compiled by the Central Statistical Office (GUS). The result was below market expectations, which averaged 10.2% y-o-y.

In comparison to the corresponding period of 2010, sales were up in all of the main branch specialisations. The highest increase was noted in other retail sale at non-specialist retail stores (up by 25.8% y-o-y), followed by textiles, clothing and footwear (up by 17.1% y-o-y), fuels (up by 11.7% y-o-y), and pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and orthopaedic equipment (up by 11.2% y-o-y). Solid growth was also seen in sales of furniture, radio, TV and household appliances, which were up by 6.4% y-o-y. By contrast, sales of newspapers, books and other items at specialist stores rose by 1.9% y-o-y, that of motor vehicles, motor cycles and parts increased by 1.6% y-o-y, while sales of food, beverages and tobacco products edged up by 1.4% y-o-y.

In the first seven months of 2011, retail sales at current prices grew by 12% y-o-y.
