Weyerhaeuser inaugurates construction of cellulose-processing plant in Gdansk

Weyerhaeuser, a US manufacturer of forest products, on 2 August initiated the construction of a factory of cellulose fibres in Gdansk, in the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone (PSSE). It will be the company’s first production facility in Europe, and the most modern plant of its type in the world, Weyerhaeuser claims.

The total value of the project is estimated at PLN 200m (approx. €50m). The factory is expected to start operations in the first quarter 2013. Initially it will employ 40 people, rising to 100 a year later. It will make cellulose fibres for personal care products, mainly for Procter & Gamble’s operation in Warsaw.

The project was delayed by one year due to opposition from local residents and green groups over its impact on the environment.
