Industrial output up by 2% y-o-y in June


Industrial output rose by 2% y-o-y in June 2011, a deceleration compared with the previous month, according to data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS). The market had anticipated a significantly bigger increase, in the region of 5.3% y-o-y.

Compared with the corresponding period of 2010, output was up in 23 (out of 34) industrial sectors. Of the main sectors, the highest growth (up by 6.7% y-o-y) was noted in water supply, waste management and remediation activities, followed by mining-quarrying (up by 4.5% y-o-y). In the manufacturing sector production was up by 1.9% y-o-y, and in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply output inched up by 0.4% y-o-y.

In the case of the country’s manufacturing sub-sectors, particularly strong increases occurred in basic metals (up by 22.1% y-o-y), metal products (up by 20.5% y-o-y), furniture (up by 18.7% y-o-y), or other non-metallic mineral products (up by 16.9% y-o-y). Production of rubber and plastic products grew by 10% y-o-y and that of electrical equipment by 8.3% y-o-y. On the other hand, production of computers and electrical and optical equipment tumbled by 30.5% y-o-y, output in machinery and equipment declined by 11.5% y-o-y, and production of pharmaceuticals went down by 6.8%.

In January-June industrial output grew by 7.4% y-o-y.
