Unemployment rate falls to 12.2% in May

2011-06-22

The registered unemployment rate stood at 12.2% at the end of May, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. This was down by 0.4 p.p. compared with April, but 0.1 p.p. higher than in the corresponding month of the previous year.

In the analysed period, just over 1.96 million Poles were registered as unemployed, a decline of 80,900 in relation to one month earlier and an increase of 54,700 versus May 2010. The highest unemployment rates were noted in the voivodships of Warminsko-Mazurskie (19.5%), Zachodniopomorskie (17.1%), Kujawsko-Pomorskie (16.5%), Lubuskie and Podkarpackie (15.3%), and Swietokrzyskie (14.6%). The lowest rates were recorded in Wielkopolskie (9.1%), Mazowieckie (9.6%), Slaskie (10.1%) and Malopolskie (10.3%).

At the same time, GUS data showed a slight month-on-month increase in the scale of redundancy plans reported by employers to labour offices. At the end of May 386 companies were declaring an intention to cut 37,100 jobs (25,500 in the public sector). This compares to 385 companies and 36,200 jobs (25,800 in the public sector) in April. On a year-on-year basis the figures improved, however: at the end of May 2010 there were 378 firms planning to cut 41,600 jobs (24,500 in the public sector).

There was also a decline in the number of job offers submitted to labour offices, in both annual and monthly terms. At 76,300 the May figure was 2.7% lower than in April and 14.5% lower year-on-year.

We anticipate a stronger recovery of labour demand in the coming months and a further decline in the registered unemployment rate. According to our forecasts, at the end of 2011 the official jobless rate will be 11.3%.
