Randstad/TNS OBOP: hiring plans hold steady, perceptions of economic outlook improve

Twenty-three percent of companies in Poland plan to add new jobs during the six months to the end of 2011, according to a new wave of a tracker poll of 300 employers by Randstad and TNS OBOP. This is down by one point from three months earlier. The number of businesses expecting to shed jobs over this period remained unchanged at 11%, whereas the share of firms planning to maintain employment at current levels slipped one point to 61%.

In terms of sectors, the outlook for hiring is strongest in financial intermediation services (32% of firms expecting to create new jobs) and transport, logistics and communication (30%), followed by manufacturing (25%). Geographically, job creation is likely to be strongest in central Poland (28%) and western Poland (25%). As before, the survey shows that employment prospects are brightest for production and sales workers.

Meanwhile, the share of companies expecting to increase wages over the next six months fell one point to 22%, with 73% of the surveyed companies anticipating no change, up from 66%. Just 1% said they would cut wages. Financial intermediation services is the sector where wage increases are planned by far the greatest percentage of firms (56%).

At the same time, 42% of the surveyed firms said they expected the opening up of the German labour market to make it harder for them to find workers, against 58% who said they did not.

At the same time, employers’ views about the general economic outlook improved markedly after taking a plunge three months earlier. Thus, the number of firms predicting the economy to grow during the next six months rose to 31% from 24%, while the share of those predicting that it would slip into recession almost halved to 11%, from 20%.

The survey was conducted between 13 and 26 May among companies employing 10 and more people.
