Manpower: companies report optimistic hiring plans for Q3

2011-06-15

Twenty-two percent of Polish firms expect to hire new workers in the third quarter of 2011 while 8% anticipate job cuts, according to the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey, an international quarterly study by the US employment services firm. This compares to 16% and 4%, respectively, in the previous quarter and marks a two-point improvement in the balance of employment expectations compared with three months earlier, to +14 points, the third most optimistic forecast among the 21 countries of the EMEA region covered by the survey (on a year-on-year basis the result represents a drop of two points, however). The share of firms planning no changes to employment levels during the coming quarter declined by nine points to 67%.

Each of the 10 main economic sectors covered by the study showed a positive net employment outlook. In six industries the balance of expectations improved compared with three months earlier. As in Q1, construction companies had the most optimistic hiring plans, but the balance declined by 6 points q-o-q to +26 points. Next came mining-quarrying and hotels and restaurants with a balance +20 points, which represented a marked improvement in the latter sector but a slight weakening for the former. In manufacturing the net outlook improved by three points from Q1 to +18. Exactly the same figures were obtained for finance, insurance, real estate & business services. The public sector staged a sharp rebound from +3 points to +14 points.

The Polish leg of the survey was conducted between 21 April and 4 May on a representative sample of 751 companies.
