Survey: executives in Poland highly confident about outlook

2011-06-02

Executives in Poland remain clearly the most optimistic in the Central Europe (CE) region about near-term prospects, according to the fifth edition of the Deloitte Business Sentiment Index. The country scored 134 points on the main composite index, up from 130 points in the October 2010 edition and compared with an average of 119 points for the six countries covered by the index (Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia).

Polish managers are particularly bullish about the outlook for their companies, with 91% describing their financial prospects as definitely or fairly positive, compared with an average of 61%. At the same time, sentiment about general economic prospects deteriorated by eight points compared with the previous edition, though a majority of Polish executives (55%) still expect the country’s economy to improve over the next six months (executives in Slovakia are the most optimistic about their economy with a positive response rate of 84%, followed by Hungary at 57% and with Poland and the Czech Republic in joint third).

The high level of optimism about company prospects shows in responses to more specific questions: thus, 85% of Polish managers expect revenues to increase over the next 12 months, more than in any other country and compared with an overall average of 63%; a similar percentage are positive about present availability of credit (compared with an average of 81%, behind only the Czech Republic); 82% expect to launch new products or services (again the highest rate, compared with an average of 69%). Also, 36% of executives in Poland expect to add new jobs during the next 12 months, well above the average of 29% and behind only Slovakia at 45%; and 58% anticipate an increase in capital spending, well ahead of the rest (43%) despite a drop from the previous edition.

The survey was conducted between 18 March and 12 April among senior executives at 183 companies drawn from the largest 200 firms in each country.
