LFS unemployment rate up to 10% in Q1

The unemployment rate measured according to the Labour Force Survey (LFS) amounted to 10% in the first quarter of 2011, up by 0.7 p.p. compared with the previous quarter and 0.6 p.p. lower than a year earlier, according to the Central Statistical Office (GUS).

During the analysed period, the total number of people out of work stood at just over 1.77 million, which represented an increase of 122,000 from Q4 2010, but was 68,000 lower than in the same period of 2010. Meanwhile, the employment rate amounted to 50% in Q1, down by 0.6 p.p. in relation to the previous quarter but up by an identical amount in relation to Q1 2010. At the same time, the number of economically inactive persons increased by 87,000, or 0.6%, versus the preceding quarter and exceeded 14.1 million people. As a result, the economic activity rate declined by 0.2 p.p. compared with Q4 2010 to 55.6%. On a year-on-year basis it increased by 0.4 p.p.
