Registered unemployment rate drops to 12.6% in April

The registered unemployment rate stood at 12.6% in April, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. This was down by 0.5 p.p. compared with March, but 0.2 p.p. higher than in the corresponding month of the previous year.

In the analysed period, just over 2.04 million Poles were registered as unemployed, a decline of 90,400 in relation to one month earlier and an increase of 69,700 versus April 2010. The highest unemployment rates were noted in the voivodships of Warminsko-Mazurskie (20.5%), Zachodniopomorskie (17.8%), Kujawsko-Pomorskie (16.9%), Podkarpackie (15.9%), Lubuskie (15.8%) and Swietokrzyskie (15%). The lowest rates were recorded in Wielkopolskie (9.4%), Mazowieckie (9.8%), Slaskie (10.4%) and Malopolskie (10.7%).

Meanwhile, GUS data showed a slight month-on-month increase in the scale of redundancy plans reported by employers to labour offices. At the end of April 385 companies were declaring an intention to cut 36,200 jobs (including 25,800 in the public sector). This compares to 355 companies and 35,900 jobs (25,100 in the public sector) in March. On a yearly basis the figures improved, however: in April 2010 there were 325 companies declaring plans to axe 40,800 jobs (24,600 in the public sector).

There was also a decline in the number of job offers submitted to labour offices, in both annual and monthly terms. At 78,400, the April figure was 5.8% lower than in March and 27.9% lower year-on-year.

We anticipate a stronger recovery of labour demand in the coming months and a further decline in the registered unemployment rate. According to our forecasts, at the end of 2011 the official jobless rate will be 11.3%.
