Cemex to build renewable power plant in Chelm

Cemex, the global cement maker, has set up a joint venture with Econ Trade, a Polish alternative energy firm, to build a power plant fuelled by municipal waste at its cement factory in Chelm (Lubelskie voivodship). The investment is expected to create 25 new jobs.

The new power plant, which is expected to start operations in 2012, will supply 100,000 tons of fuel annually, allowing for a further reduction of the Chelm factory’s carbon dioxide footprint. The factory already derives over 70% of its energy from alternative sources, a higher percentage than at any other cement plant in the Cemex group, or in Poland’s cement industry.

Cemex has two cement factories in Poland. The other one is located in Rudniki (Slaskie voivodship). The group’s Polish operation employs approximately 1,350 people.
