Inflation advances to 4.5% y-o-y in April


The consumer price index (CPI) amounted to 4.5% y-o-y in April, an acceleration compared with the previous month, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. The result slightly exceeded market expectations, which averaged 4.4% y-o-y.

The highest increase in the 12 months to April was noted in transport (a category that includes car fuel), up by 7.6% y-o-y, followed by food and non-alcoholic beverages (up by 7.2% y-o-y), and housing and energy (up by 5.8% y-o-y). In hotels and restaurants prices went up by 4.3% y-o-y, in health by 3.7% y-o-y, in alcoholic beverages and tobacco products by 2.8% y-o-y, and in education by 2.7% y-o-y. In recreation and culture prices inched up by 0.8% y-o-y.

By contrast, clothing and footwear prices were down by 1.1% y-o-y, while communication charges slipped 0.8% y-o-y.

On a month-on-month basis, the CPI was 0.5%.

In the first four months of the year consumer prices rose by 4% y-o-y.
