Poland tops ranking of investment attractiveness among German investors

Poland remains the most attractive investment destination in Central and Eastern Europe for German investors operating in Poland, though its lead has narrowed compared with a year ago, according to an annual survey by the Polish-German Chamber of Commerce. The country received an aggregate score of 4.8 points (on a scale of 1-6). The Czech Republic came second with 4.13 points, followed by Slovakia at 4.12.

The survey shows that German companies are confident about the Polish economy, with 50% describing the country’s current economic situation as good and 47.5% as satisfactory; and with 52.5% expecting the economy to improve further in the course of this year while 41.3% expecting non change. Just 2.5% said the situation was bad and 6.3% predict that it will deteriorate in the course of 2011. German firms also see positive prospects for their business, with two thirds or more expecting a rise in sales and planning to add jobs and increase investments.

Perceptions of Poland’s key strengths and weaknesses as an investment destination did not change much, except for a marked rise in assessments of political stability. German investors still complain about the poor state of the country’s transport infrastructure, bureaucracy, and lack of public finance reform. They would also like Poland to join the euro.

More than 86% of respondents said they would invest in Poland again if given a choice, and just 5% said they would not.

The survey was carried out in February among representatives of nearly 80 German investors in Poland.
