Polish SMEs jittery over economy

Recovery comes slowly to Poland’s SME sector, two new surveys suggest. Thus, the latest wave of a tracker poll by Maison Institute for Rzeczpospolita, which interviewed 708 companies with up to 250 employees in March, shows that only 20% of small and medium companies in Poland expect an increase in orders in 2011 compared with last year, whereas 48% predict that orders will be flat and 32% say they will decline versus 2010.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Economy’s SME Development Index shows that small and medium companies’ views about the near-term economic outlook have taken a sharp turn for the worse: nearly 50% said conditions would deteriorate during the first half of 2011, whereas less than 10% thought they would improve. Firms were also more uncertain about their financial performance in the near future.
