Retail sales up by 9.4% y-o-y in March


Retail sales at current prices grew by 9.4% y-o-y in March, a deceleration compared with the previous month, according to data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS). The result was better than market expectations, which were for an increase of about 7.5% y-o-y.

In comparison with the corresponding period of 2010, sales were up in six of the eight main branch specialisations. The highest increase was noted in other retail sale at non-specialist retail stores (up by 25.8% y-o-y), followed by fuels (up by 19.2% y-o-y) and pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and orthopaedic equipment (up by 16.8% y-o-y). Double-digit growth also occurred in sales of textiles, clothing and footwear (up by 12% y-o-y). Sales of motor vehicles, motor cycles and parts were 8.7% y-o-y higher, while sales of furniture, radio, TV and household appliances went up by 4.7% y-o-y. By contrast, sales of food, beverages and tobacco products fell by 3.5% y-o-y while sales of newspapers, books and other items at specialist stores slipped by 1.5% y-o-y.

In the first three months of 2011 retail sales at current prices rose by 9.9% y-o-y.
