Lotte moves closer to building two plants in Poland

Lotte, the Japanese confectionery group that last year acquired E. Wedel, will by the end of June select a site for its first two factories in Poland, Puls Biznesu has learnt. The 20 hectare complex is expected to start operations in 2012. The total value of the investment is estimated at €200m, and the factories will between them create 400 jobs, according to sources close to the project.

A list of 16 candidate locations has reportedly been reduced to four, all in Southwestern Poland and each in the proximity of a special economic zone (Katowice SEZ, Kostrzyn-Slubice SEZ, Legnica SEZ and Walbrzych SEZ). According to the newspaper, the locations include Zielona Gora and Swidnica (Dolnoslaskie voivodship).

As part of its 2010 takeover of E. Wedel from Kraft Foods of the US, Lotte acquired the Polish company’s factory in Warsaw, but it plans to significantly increase production capacity in the country to help its expansion in Europe.

Lotte is the world’s third largest chewing gum manufacturer, and its confectionery portfolio includes many well-known Asian brands.
