Fortum to shave 120 jobs at CHP plants in Slaskie

Fortum, the Finish power and heat company, announced plans to axe 120 jobs, or 25% of the combined workforce, at EC Zabrze and ZE Bytom, as it moves to integrate the two combined heat and power (CHP) producers that it bought from the state in January.

According to the company, the cuts will affect mainly administrative and managerial jobs (60 each at both firms), and are necessary to improve financial performance, lay foundations for future expansion in the Slaskie energy market, and prepare the companies for new investments.

Fortum, which is the world’s number four heat generator, perceives Poland as a key growth market and is in the middle of a major investment campaign in the country. In September it launched a PLN 530m (approx. €132m) biomass-fired CHP plant in Czestochowa (Slaskie voivodship), and in November it revealed plans to build a 350 MW, coal- or gas-fired CHP plant in Zabrze at a cost of PLN 1.2-1.6bn (€0.3-0.4bn).
