Retail sales up by 12.2% y-o-y in February


Retail sales at current prices grew by 12.2% y-o-y in February, a sharp acceleration compared with the previous month, according to data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS). The result was much better than the 7.1% y-o-y expected by the market.

In comparison with the corresponding period of 2010, sales were up in all the main branch specialisations except newspapers, books and other items at specialist stores, which slumped by 14.4% y-o-y. The highest increase was noted in other sales at non-specialist retail stores (up by 33.8% y-o-y) and furniture, radio, TV and household appliances (up by 32.2% y-o-y), followed by pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and orthopaedic equipment (up by 23.1% y-o-y). Solid double-digit growth also occurred in sales of fuels (up by 18% y-o-y) and textiles, clothing and footwear (up by 13% y-o-y). Sales of motor vehicles, motor cycles and parts were 7.2% y-o-y higher, while sales of food, beverages and tobacco products went up by 5.2% y-o-y.

In the first two months of 2011 retail sales at current prices climbed by 9.7% y-o-y.
