Industrial output up by 10.7% y-o-y in February


Industrial output climbed by 10.7% y-o-y in February, a slight acceleration compared with the previous month, according to data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS). The figure exceeded market expectations, which were for an increase of about 10% y-o-y.

Compared with the corresponding period of 2010, output was up in 26 (out of 34) industrial sectors. Of the main sectors, the highest growth (by 11.3% y-o-y) was noted in manufacturing, followed by water supply, waste management and remediation activities (up by 8.5% y-o-y). In mining-quarrying output was up by 6.9% y-o-y and in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply by 6.7% y-o-y.

In the case of the country’s manufacturing sub-sectors, particularly strong increases occurred in other non-metallic mineral products (up by 34.8% y-o-y), metal products (up by 29.6% y-o-y), rubber and rubber products (up by 24.7% y-o-y) and motor vehicles (up by 24.4% y-o-y). Solid double-digit growth was also noted e.g. in chemicals and chemical products (up by 16.7% y-o-y). On the other hand, production of computer, electronic and optical products slumped by 12% y-o-y, output in the pharma sector declined by 6.6% y-o-y, production of beverages was down by 5.2% y-o-y and of machinery and equipment by 4.1% y-o-y.

In January-February industrial output grew by 10.1% y-o-y.
