Weyerhaeuser gets permit for cellulose factory in Gdansk

Weyerhaeuser, a US manufacturer of forest products, has taken an important step towards erecting a large factory of cellulose fibres in Gdansk, after the city’s mayor granted a building permit for the project. The decision is still subject to appeal, however, and the investment has run up against opposition from local residents.

Assuming that no appeals are filed or accepted by city authorities, the company estimates that construction work could get underway in June, and the facility would start operations as of 2013.

The 17,000 m2 plant will make cellulose fibres for personal care products (Procter & Gamble will be its main customer). According to earlier reports, the value of the project is PLN 200-250m (approx. €50-63m).
