Manpower: companies optimistic about hiring outlook for Q2

Sixteen percent of Polish firms expect to hire new workers in the second quarter of 2011, while just 4% anticipate job cuts, according to the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey, an international quarterly study by the US employment services firm. This compares to 17% and 12%, respectively, in the previous quarter and marks a seven-point improvement in the balance of employment expectations compared with three months earlier, to +12 points, one of the most optimistic forecasts in the 21 countries of the EMEA region covered by the survey (on a yearly basis the result was one point lower). The percentage of firms planning no changes to employment levels during the coming quarter increased by eight points to 76%.

Nine of the 10 main economic sectors covered by the study showed a positive net employment outlook. The construction sector reported the sharpest improvement, with the balance of expectations surging to +32 points from zero three months earlier (and from +11 points a year ago). Hiring intentions likewise improved markedly in mining & quarrying, where the outlook emerged from negative territory to reach +24 points. Increases were also noted in manufacturing and in finance, insurance, real estate & business services, where the net employment outlook stood at a respectable +15 points. By contrast, in the public sector, which three months earlier topped the list with a strongly positive outlook, the balance slumped by 17 points to just +3 points, the lowest levels ever. The only sector to report a negative outlook was electricity, gas and water supply at -1 points, down by three points q-o-q and by 12 points year-on-year.

The Polish leg of the survey was conducted between 13 and 26 January on a representative sample of 750 companies.
