Honeywell gets PLN 50m grant for factory in Poland but project is uncertain

Honeywell, the US industrial group, has been awarded an EU grant of PLN 50.5m (approx. €12.6m) from the Ministry of Economy for the construction of a factory of turbochargers in Poland, it emerged at the beginning of March. However, the decision may have come too late, and the planned factory may be located in Slovakia instead, Puls Biznesu reported.

The possibility of obtaining EU funds under action 4.5.1 of the Innovative Economy Operational Programme 2007-2013 (which supports “investments of major importance to the national economy”) was a major argument in favour of locating the plant in Poland. The likeliest location was Nowa Sol (Lubuskie voivodship). But according to local authorities and officials at the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency (PAIiIZ), Slovakia has in the meantime emerged as a frontrunner in the race to secure the investment, not least because it is able to offer more generous state aid. Honeywell commented merely that it was still exploring investment opportunities in Eastern Europe, and that it was yet to make final decisions about the nature and location of these investments.

In the autumn of 2010 Honeywell was reported to be considering the location of two factories in Western Poland, one making turbochargers and the other brake pads. Their value was estimated at PLN 160m (€40m) each. The latter project, which was not eligible for EU funding, is now more likely to go to Romania, according to Nowa Sol authorities.
