Royal Unibrew Polska merges with local brewer Van Pur

The Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) has given the green light for Royal Unibrew, the Danish beer manufacturer, to merge its Polish operation with Van Pur, a mid-tier domestic player, in an all-share deal. The transaction will create a group consisting of five breweries with combined annual output of 3.4-3.6 million hectolitres and aggregate sales of PLN 500m (approx. €126m). It will control some 10% of the Polish market.

The objective of the merger is to create a stronger entity better able to compete with the top three of Poland’s beer market, i.e. Kompania Piwowarska (SABMiller), Grupa Zywiec (Heineken) and Carlsberg. Royal Unibrew vowed it would maintain and expand all the five entities making up the enlarged group.
