Pilkington receives PLN 93m grant for PLN 300m manufacturing project in Poland

Pilkington, one of the world’s largest glass manufacturers, has been awarded an EU grant of PLN 92.8m (approx. €23.3m) from the Ministry of Economy for a large manufacturing project in Poland.

The funding, allocated under action 4.5.1 of the Innovative Economy Operational Programme 2007-2013 (which supports “investments of major importance to the national economy”), will be used to help finance the construction of a new glass works in Chmielow near Nowa Deba (Podkarpackie voivodship), according to unofficial information obtained by Puls Biznesu. Because the EU grant represents 30% of the total value of the project, the investment could be worth about PLN 300m (€75m). The Chmielow site is to be incorporated in the Tarnobrzeg Special Economic Zone.

The announcement decreases the likelihood that Pilkington will locate its planned new facility in Romania. In late December the company warned that it might do so, after the failure of plans for a capacity extension at its glass works in Sandomierz (Swietokrzyskie voivodship), amid fears that the area was at serious risk of flooding. The company complained that local authorities were not prepared to invest in anti-flooding measures and infrastructure to ensure adequate protection for the factory.

Chmielow is 30 kilometres from Sandomierz.
